Linear codes cannot approximate the network capacity within any constant factor

چکیده
Network coding studies the capacity of networks to carry information, when internal nodes are allowed to actively encode information. It is known that for multi-cast networks, the network coding capacity can be achieved by linear codes. It is also known not to be true for general networks. The best separation to date is by Dougherty et al. [IEEE Trans. Information Theory, 2005] who constructed a network with capacity 1, where linear codes can achieve a rate of at most 10/11. We show that linear codes cannot approximate the capacity of a network within any constant factor. That is, for any 0 < α < 1 we construct a network with network capacity 1, where linear codes can achieve a rate of at most α. This is achieved by a new network composition operation, which allows to amplify bounds on the linear capacity of networks.

Quantum Stabilizer Codes and Classical Linear Codes
We show that within any quantum stabilizer code there lurks a classical binary linear code with similar error-correcting capabilities, thereby demonstrating new connections between quantum codes and classical codes. Using this result—which applies to degenerate as well as nondegenerate codes— previously established necessary conditions for classical linear codes can be easily translated into ne...
متن کاملCyclic Orbit Codes with the Normalizer of a Singer Subgroup
An algebraic construction for constant dimension subspace codes is called orbit code. It arises as the orbits under the action of a subgroup of the general linear group on subspaces in an ambient space. In particular orbit codes of a Singer subgroup of the general linear group has investigated recently. In this paper, we consider the normalizer of a Singer subgroup of the general linear group a...
متن کاملAverage-radius list-recovery of random linear codes: it really ties the room together
We analyze the list-decodability, and related notions, of random linear codes. This has been studied extensively before: there are many different parameter regimes and many different variants. Previous works have used complementary styles of arguments—which each work in their own parameter regimes but not in others—and moreover have left some gaps in our understanding of the list-decodability o...
متن کاملThe Hardness of Approximate Optimia in Lattices, Codes, and Systems of Linear Equations
We prove the following about the Nearest Lattice Vector Problem (an any e, norm), the Nearest Codeword Problem for binary codes, the problem of learning a halfspace in the presence of errors, and some other problems. 1. Approximating the optimum within any constant factor is NP-hard. 2. If for some 6 > 0 there exists a polynomial t ime algorithm that approximates the optimum within a factor of ...
متن کاملHardness of Approximating the Minimum Distance of a Linear Code
We show that the minimum distance of a linear code (or equivalently, the weight of the lightest codeword) is not approximable to within any constant factor in random polynomial time (RP), unless NP equals RP. Under the stronger assumption that NP is not contained in RQP (random quasi-polynomial time), we show that the minimum distance is not approximable to within the factor 2log(1 ) n, for any...
